Fixing Windows Mobile task and event reminders

As part of the general trend of human-to-machine intelligence outsourcing, the Poorhouse likes to take note of its ever-more failing memory and delegate tasks such as knowing what to do on an average day to PDA-esque technology. With even the most basic of mobile phones now having enough diary features to plan a space mission this generally works well. A day without 1000 reminders to "Get out of bed", "Have a shower", "Tie up shoelaces" and so on is probably a day wasted.

All goes well until the PDA/phone/whatever breaks. Unfortunately the Poorhouse's current smartphone which runs Windows Mobile 5 did break a bit - although quite subtly. Whilst you could still input appointments, tasks et al. it would always fail to actually remind you to do them. Wonderful.

Further investigation saw that the screen would come on at the appropriate time, but the absence of a buzz or ear-piercing howl meant that the event was generally ignored when the phone was in one of its usual default locations - down the back of the sofa, in the wrong coat and so on.

Uninstalling a few potentially interfering applications didn't help at all. Having recently loaded up a pile of nice applications to play with a hard reset was undesirable.

Further investigation led to the discovery of the Windows Mobile 5 notification queue. This is apparently a big queue (hence the name one imagines) of pending notifications including any tasks, appointments, alarms and other application-specific events that are to take place. It seems this queue can get corrupt or blocked...with symptoms including no reminders being show. Result!

Commonly recommended programs to deal with the queue include MemMaid or perhaps Pocket Mechanic. The idea with MemMaid at least is that you go through the queue and look for anything with a dodgy looking date, say if it is in the past, has no date, is a mess of characters and so on. Once identified they can be deleted, and hopefully all becomes well. This sounding slightly complicated and open to manual errors not to mention the fact that it costs real money put the Poorhouse off a bit.

A bit of further Googling revealed pmClean (follow that link and look towards the bottom of the page). This is a free utility that "Remove all duplicate and stale system Notifications, improving system stability and alarm reliability!" amongst other things like cleaning Internet Explorer caches, temporary files etc. Supporting Windows Mobile 2003, 2003 SE and 5.0 Simply load it onto your PDA, install it and run. Let it whir away a bit and it will show figures allowing you to see how many dodgy notifications it removed. If this amount is 1 or more then perhaps your problem is fixed. The Poorhouse lost maybe 30 of the invalid entries. A reboot of the phone led to numerous real notifications triggering, risking something of a seizure, but once that was done life was back to normal, task and events reminders triggered loudly and annoyingly and the Poorhouse could go back to under-utilising even the small amount of available biological brain capacity.

This was a real problem for

This was a real problem for me, i am not much of an expert in windows. I had to torture myself for two weeks until my friend stepped by and so me. I told him about my problems and he solve it in half an hour. Your blog is very informative and reachable. Thank you for the information, i have already browsed it in my computer.Leather Sofas

THANK YOU

you sir, have helped me in ways i cannot thank you enough.

thank you for the research and conclusive successful result

No problems, may you have

No problems, may you have many happy reminders.

Kudos

I wanted to pass along my thanks for your post on how to fix the missing reminder on Windows Mobile 5. My reminders had been working just fine, but then stopped (poor dog missed a couple pills because of this). My wife has an iPhone that also syncs with the same PC as my WinMo 5 PDA/Phone and her phone chimed just fine. After a little digging around online, I was offered your site as a solution and sure enough, the pmClean did the job. It referenced 77 reminders and after I ran the cleaner, it dropped to 47. I then created a test reminder and not only did it chime, the notification appeared on screen as well. Thanks for your help and time in posting this solution to the web.

pmClean works! Thank you

I lost my notification sounds after setting up a "never end" repeat reminder in Calendar. I installed a trial version of MemMaid and found several strange items in the notifications queue and deleted them. Unfortunately this didn't fix the problem though. I was nearly resigned to doing a hard reset but found this site recommending pmClean and am really pleased to say it has solved the fault and now my notifications sound again - hurray! It is strange that a free utility can fix something that a $19.95 program cannot.

Thanks to you and to pmClean for cleaning up after Microsoft!

Thanks!

Had the reminder problem for a couple weeks now causing much frustration. Eventually decided today to Google and after trying numerous things the link to this page came up.

Installed pmClean and presto problem solved.

Thanks you for posting this!

Great, happy it helped!

Great, happy it helped! Surely something else that should be built in to Win mobile.

It worked! Fumbled on the CAB though!

It worked very well and it's back on the rails!

By the way, because I wasn't a techie, I fumbled with not knowing what to do with that CAB file. But then I googled and figured out.

Here is the learning for someone stupid as I am:
1. Download the CAB file from http://www.pocketmax.net/redial.html
2. Copy it into your windows based mobile device.
3. Use the file explorer in the PDA and view the location where you pasted the CAB
4. Double click it, choose the location to install (device/storage card)
5. Go to Start -> Programme and then click on pmClean (it comes as a yellow broom).
6. Select everything and say clean up
7. Set up a schedule do this clean up every day when you sleep!

BH.

Excellent solution! This

Excellent solution! This site came up first afer typing 'windows mobile reminders' and I downloaded pmClean and fixed the prob within 5 minutes - quickest fix of a problem I've ever had!

Fixing Windows Mobile task and event reminders

pmClean reported 56 reminders. After Iran it, it showed 26. It would not clean any more. My reminders still do not work. Do you have any other suggestions?

Hmm, sorry to hear it

Hmm, sorry to hear it doesn't work for you. Afraid I don't have any other ideas, sorry, other than the other couple of programs I mentioned that I happened to chance on a year or two ago - MemMaid and Pocket Mechanic. They didn't work well for me though...but presumably they help some people! Good luck.

pmclean worked great for me.
