The Internet is full of sound. Most of it is annoying, but occasionally there might be a streaming radio station, RealAudio file or something similar that is actually interesting and you'd like to keep a copy of. Unfortunately some sound formats do not lend themselves to being easy to download and copy, whether this be as a piracy prevention precaution or just a technological flaw.
Enter then the slightly strangely named but totally free-of-charge MP3myMP3 Recorder, as mentioned on the excellent Lifehacker. Its tag line: "If you can hear it, you can record it".
This seems to be mostly true, except if you have certain sound card setups which still prevent it happening. Basically it records from any audio source your computer has available, and if you pick something corresponding to "all sound output" such as wave mix or stereo mix, you'll get a copy of whatever you're listening to at the time, no matter what the initial format the sound file was in. It will then, unsurprisingly, save a copy to mp3 format, or wav if you prefer.
And now the real reason the Poorhouse was interested in such a thing. A copy of the amazing end part of the episode of Byker Grove where PJ gets blinded by a paintball is sought after, basically so we can laugh at "I canna see spuggie, I canna see" dialogue or whatever the exact phrase was. This program would be ideal for saving such a thing, whether it be from an audio file, or the soundtrack of a youtube file or anything else. The only problem is that the Poorhouse extreme searching has not come up with the source material anyway. Suggestions are welcomed as to sources for this very important epoch-defining soundclip.

audacity
There´s a program called audacity that does the same thing and you can also chop files down to get rid of blank space at the beginning between pressing record and starting the file you record. it´s freeware too :)
it´s got quite a satisfying wavy line effect too.
had a bit of a look for that video and can´t find it anywhere. surely it must be out there....
using work´s computer for the search. i bet they worry about the computer history after i´ve been on what with looking at articles about beetroot and wee and scenes from byker grove as well as loads of cartoons. not conducive to work at all. god damn/bless the internet.
Hey, thanks you emigrant! I
Hey, thanks you emigrant! I think Audacity is mentioned somewhere onsite but to be honest I didn't know it could do that easily. Whoo yeah - why take 2 programs into the shower (on your waterproof laptop) when you can take one?
I am beyond astonished that Byker Byker Byker Canna See video is nowhere. Come on someone, sort me out!!
So what work are you doing with a computer? I had a nasty feeling that you would be basically cut off from civilisation (by which I mean the internet of course) out there. Maybe you actually ARE teaching English at a school like for some reason I thought you were....???
hahaha i´m in spain. it´s
hahaha i´m in spain. it´s like england times 10. estartit is more english than england.
once a week or so i do office duty. which essentially means sitting at a desk in case the phone rings with a computer and the internet. happy days.
i love it out here. there´s absolutely no stress. fantastic.
no, i´m not teaching english but i am thinking of doing a tefl course and doing a bit of travelling. this working abroad thing might just be the thing for me.
wow, veering off into what should relaly be in an email and not really too relevant to byker grove/streaming media.
i have another program on the laptop can´t remember the name of it that saved streaming media video and everything. i shall have a think. perhaps gmms but that sounds too much like mobile phone technology doesn´t it?
ttfn, i´ll email you
Cool, sounds like you're
Cool, sounds like you're having a good time. We'll take it to email as you suggest, otherwise no doubt you'll be getting an international cyber-stalker bearing down on your now not so secret location. There's already a site for posting dangerously inappropriate personal comments and details anyway.
