A couple of righteous bargain-creating things to tell today, surfacing from the awesome MoneySavingExpert site. One will fill your belly, the other will give you both more room in your cupboards and a warm satisfaction at having tried to do something to save the planet a bit. Maybe.
Food first. There are 27 HA! HA! Bars around the country, which in the Poorhouse's limited experience do some rather tasty food. Find your local here, although if you don't live in a large-sized urban area you might be disappointed. Then print this voucher off and as long as you can persuade a friend to go eat with you before the end of April this year you can get a £5 discount, you cheap date you.
Moving on to planet-time now...
Sad to say that being the big mega-corp Walmart evil that it is the Poorhouse is fairly convinced ASDA does more environmental and ethical harm than good big-time. However, if you are one of the first million customers to go give them 5 or more old supermarket plastic bags, whether from ASDA or not, you get a free "Bag for Life".
A Bag for Life (which normally costs money, not much, but some) is designed to replace the free, often very unnecessary and even more often inappropriately disposed of standard supermarket plastic bags, the idea being it is stronger than a standard bag (so it can carry more stuff), it's made of 100% recycled material and because you keep it for next time you go shopping - don't forget to take it with you and entirely defeat the whole point of it - you won't need to use up anywhere near so many of the normal bags of evil. Given each person in the UK apparently throws away over 290 bags a year, to substitute these with 3 or 4 strong and permanent bags has got to be a good thing all round. By all means don't shop at the ASDA behemoth for many valid reasons, but if you have plastic bags you might as well swap them for something slightly more useful and better for the world at large.

Plastic waste
You'd love the "bag culture" in the Middle-East!
Whenever you buy ANYTHING here, it has to be sold in a plastic bag. No matter if it's a packet of cigarettes that I've ALMOST given up, or if it's a tube of boiled sweets that I'm now hooked on instead of the smokes(!), you have to take it out in a Blue Plastic Bag (always blue for some reason) It doesn't matter if your purchase would fit far more easily in your pocket without the Blue Plastic Bag; the shop assistant will always insist on putting it in a BPS!
BPSs are not reusable, as the quality is somewhat inferior to the ones that ASDA give when you forgot to bring (SHE forget them, not ME!) your Bags For Life from home, so there is a glut of BPSs that find their way everywhere - the "locals" here obviously feel guilty about putting them in litter bins or the bin at home, far prefer to abandon them in the street or dumping them out of the car every time they get out.
Go a few miles out in the desert, and you'll find families of "locals" picnicking "back to their roots" on motorway clover-leafs, beside a busy highway, anywhere dusty and where they can smell the results of their oil-rich nations - exhaust fumes! So what happens to the BPSs that they took out with them? They blow around in the dust for a while until finally you realise where these BPSs come from - they are obviously a vegetable material which is harvested from a plant that looks remarkably like an Acacia Bush - In fact it's a Blue Plastic Bag Tree where these things grow!
