Bratz, the line of anorexic slutty stripper dolls marketed to 8-year olds, sunk to a new low over Christmas according to according to at least a couple of squeaky-clean families.
Upon unwrapping the electro-version of the dolls over the holiday season - and by unwrapping the Poorhouse means opening the parcel, rather than taking off a plastic baby's skirt to discover a black mesh thong - kids and parents were together surprised as they started firing off f-bombs, albeit accompanied with irritating tinny music.
The reputed lyrics? "Baby bottle with bling...doing our f**king thing. F**k you!"
Of course it's all a matter of interpretation. The makers of these plastic un-pop princesses deny this lyricism surprisingly enough, with the official transcript reading "Baby bottle with bling...doin our fashion thing. So cute.". Plenty of consumers likewise dispute the claims, saying that this is fuss over nothing with claims that "They're just looking for something to complain about". At least 99% of the real world probably don’t care one fig either way.
But in the interests of participatory democracy, the Poorhouse would like to present you with an opportunity to judge for yourself, courtesy of Youtube. Quieten your co-workers, draw up a chair, and play the below - which, depending on your interpretation - may be NSFW, but only if the dolls themselves are.
There is naturally a deeper darker secret behind these dolls, probably far worse than allegations of pre-teen sexualisation and foul-mouth singing and occasional incidence of illegal drug trafficking - rather something that really does unarguably make people's lives a torturous misery. They, like plenty of other pointless plastic tat, are made in a sweatshop situated in China
They are made in a sweatshop in China, where women are routinely forced to work seven days and 94.5 hours a week, for wages of just 51.5 cents an hour, $US4.13 a day.
As bad as conditions are now, they are about to get worse. The factory wants to fire all the workers and then bring them back as temporary workers with contracts of just one to eight months, which would strip them of any legal rights they might have. As it is, the workers are denied sick days as well as work injury and health insurance.
Yay capitalism. No sweat.
NB: Apologies to anyone who is offended at the uncensored usage of the word "slut" in this article. All the Poorhouse can say in defence is that we got taught that it was big and clever by the Little Mermaid.
